Egan Bernal has once again suffered from bad luck. The former Tour de France winner crashed during the Clásica Jaén's final and hit his shoulder hard. The extent of the damage was determined after he was examined in hospital.
Bernal had performed impressively in recent weeks. The INEOS Grenadiers rider was crowned as the Colombian road and time trial champion. This evoked many emotions and a ray of hope: would the old Bernal finally return after that terrible crash in 2022?
It caused unprecedented scenes in Colombia. After his titles, Bernal was already being cheered in an entirely typical Colombian way. His brother Ronald Stiven Bernal was at the finish line; he couldn't hide his tears. Unfortunately, the Bernal mania was short-lived, and now he is injured again.

On Sunday, he also rode strongly in the final of the Clásica Jaén. He anticipated a breakaway several times to neutralize it for his teammate and eventual winner, Michael Kwiatkowski. But with less than twelve kilometers to go, things went wrong. Bernal tried to respond to an attack by Isaac Del Toro (UAE) but lost control and slipped into a problematic turn.
The Colombian landed hard on his shoulder and could not continue the race. His team reported that he was taken to the hospital for further medical tests to determine the severity of his injuries. Unfortunately, the verdict for the rider and his British team was a broken collarbone.

It is a sad setback for the Colombian, especially since he has been riding well recently. He recently broke a Strava KOM in Colombia, resulting from two years of hard work and rehabilitation. This happened on the infamous Patios in Colombia, a climb Bernal says is one of the most popular climbs near Bogotá.
He had tried several times to improve the segment, which is 5.91 kilometers long on Strava and has an average gradient of 6.4%. He succeeded and proudly shared on Instagram: "Today, after several attempts, I finally broke the record."
