A decisive surge on Moskesstraat set the stage for Elisa Longo Borghini's triumphant win at the Flèche Brabançonne on Wednesday afternoon. She dropped Dutch competitor Demi Vollering and powered her way to a solo victory. During the flash interview, her happiness was unmistakable. "Making my move on Moskesstraat was essential. It's a tribute to my husband, Jacopo Mosca. I dedicate this win to him."
Longo Borghini had already demonstrated her form with a victory in the Tour of Flanders. Today, she added the Flèche Brabançonne to her achievements. A sign that things are going well for her and her team Lidl-Trek. "Yes, this is another great victory for our team. Today, we wanted an open race. We wanted to attack at 85 kilometers from the finish."
Defeating Demi Vollering meant a lot to Longo Borghini, of course. Although she did mention after the race that it could just as easily go the other way next time. "Today I beat her, tomorrow she could beat me just as well. We were really keen on this victory. I'm surprised I managed to break away from her because I have a lot of respect for her and she seemed very strong. But I was stronger."
For the rest of April, there are three more legendary races on the schedule: the Amstel Gold Race, the Flèche Wallonne, and Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Longo Borghini wants to return the favor to her teammates in those races. "Those races are still ahead, and I would like to help the team there. In the Amstel, the plan is to ride for Shirin," she revealed a hint of the strategy.
