Freddy Ovett, who is Mathieu van der Poel's regular training partner when he stays in Spain, ran an incredible time at the Malaga Marathon on Sunday. The Australian completed the 42.195 kilometers in 2 hours and 34 minutes, averaging an impressive pace of 3 minutes and 39 seconds per kilometer.
"Never surrender," Ovett captioned his Strava post on Sunday. Recently, he also ran the Valencia Marathon but was hindered by calf cramps. In Malaga, however, he was able to give it his all, resulting in this outstanding time.
Ovett — who has expressed interest in getting Van der Poel to join him in running someday — comes from a family with strong running genes. His father, Steve Ovett, won gold in the 800 meters at the 1980 Moscow Olympics and also claimed bronze in the 1500 meters during that same edition of the Games. During that era, he held the 1500-meter world record multiple times.
In mid-October, Ovett ran a half marathon in Valencia, clocking 1 hour, 8 minutes and 48 seconds, with an average pace of 3 minutes and 16 seconds per kilometer.
