Yet another terrible accident has rocked the cycling world. After the death of Muriel Furrer during the World Championships in Zurich, the training accident of Italy's Sara Piffer, in which she lost her life at the age of nineteen, and the training accident with the German track team in Mallorca, another tragedy took place last weekend: talented Briton Aidan Worden died during training and was only eighteen.

Last Saturday, Worden was training in his home region of Lancashire when he collided with a car. "All of us here at British Cycling are devastated to learn of the tragic loss of Aidan Worden. A promising young talent and incredibly valued friend and teammate, there is no doubt this loss will be felt deeply by the whole cycling community," the British Cycling Federation wrote on social media. "Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this tough time."

The European Cycling Union (UEC) is also devastated by the death of the talented Briton. "The British junior time trial champion was tragically killed in a collision with a car during a training session. Another young life lost too soon,' the UEC mourned. 'Emergency services arrived at the scene, but unfortunately, despite their efforts, the cyclist died on the spot," the local police reported.

Dark months for cycling

In recent months, there have sadly been several serious accidents in which talented riders have lost their lives. At the World Championships in Zurich, which was supposed to be a big party, Furrer lost her life at the age of 18. The Swiss rider, who was experiencing the best moment of her career so far in her home country, crashed on a descent and died from her injuries.

Less than a few weeks ago, tragic news came from Italy. The 19-year-old, talented Piffer was killed in a collision during training. The Italian was cycling with her brother Christian in Trentino when a car did not see them. The rider was considered a great talent but will never be able to pursue her passion for cycling again. She died in her brother's arms.

On Monday, January 27, the German track team was hit while training on the Spanish island of Mallorca. The six cyclists who were training were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Fortunately, none of the riders' lives were in danger. The driver, an 89-year-old man, had tested negative for alcohol and drug use after the accident. The man told the police that he had not seen the group of riders.

Call for more safety in platoon

With all the tragic accidents in recent months, the call for more safety is intensifying. Former Giro winner Francesco Moser also called for more protection for cyclists on the road and in the peloton. "It's unacceptable. There are far too many tragedies on the roads and far too many deaths. We must do something, we must stop this," the Italian told Tuttobiciweb.
