Movistar is no longer chasing overall victories in grand tours, a shift from the glory days of Alejandro Valverde and Nairo Quintana. Recently, we labelled their season underwhelming, but expectations for the team are evolving. On Thursday, Movistar announced a major step forward, committing to a long-term strategy focused on developing the riders already within its ranks. Quintana recently renewed his contract, though at 34, he’s no longer the team’s main driving force. On Thursday, the team secured four-year extensions through 2028 for five promising Spanish riders: Carlos Canal, Pelayo Sanchez, Jon Barrenetxea, Ivan Roméo and
Javier Romo. It’s a significant move for Movistar, particularly given the potential of Romo and Roméo.

Ivan Roméo recently crowned himself U23 World Time Trial Champion
Roméo as GC hopeful, Sanchez for stage wins: Movistar is sending clear message
Barrenetxea, at just 24, showed his knack for winning by taking the Circuito de Getxo this season. The same can be said of Sanchez. Known for his aggressive style, he was frequently on the attack last year and earned a stage win at the Giro d’Italia. Canal, a 23-year-old talent, has yet to claim major results but is expected to play a key support role in the years ahead.
The spotlight, however, is on two standout riders. Romo, who also signed a long-term extension, impressed in mountain stages at the Tour de France, placed seventh at the Vuelta a Burgos, and finished twelfth at the Critérium du Dauphiné. But all eyes are on Roméo. At just 21, he became the U23 World Time Trial Champion and finished ninth at the AlUla Tour earlier this year, which included a challenging mountain-top finish. A young Spanish time trial specialist is a rare find. This marks an exciting day for Movistar, signaling a clear new direction focused on the future.
