Norwegian cyclist Andre Drege (25) died after fall in descent in Tour of Austria

Tragic news from the Tour of Austria. In the fourth stage won by Filippo Ganna, Norwegian cyclist Andre Drege has passed away following a crash in the descent of the Grossglockner. Drege, who rode for Coop-Repsol, was 25 years old.

Drege reportedly fell during the descent of the Grossglockner climb towards Heiligenblut and succumbed to his injuries. The exact circumstances are still under investigation. Drege was part of the day's leading group and crashed during the descent.

The Norwegian was known as a late bloomer and had reportedly signed a contract with WorldTour team Jayco AlUla for next year. He had won several races at lower levels earlier this year.

Following the seriousness of Drege's situation, the celebration of Ganna's victory in Austria was canceled. It remains unclear if the final stage on Sunday will proceed.

Drege's team issued a statement Saturday evening: "We are devastated by the news of the tragic passing of André Drege. Our thoughts and prayers are with André’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. André's family has requested privacy as they mourn the loss, and we kindly ask that their wishes be respected."

Through this message, we want to extend our heartfelt condolences to Drege's family, all his friends, and everyone who holds him dear.
