With the Tour of the Algarve, we have the European preparation race for the classics on the program this week. While some sprinters and GC riders opt for the UAE Tour in the Middle East, several top riders start the season in southern Portugal. IDLProCycling.com gives you a detailed preview!

Take a look at the list of winners of the Tour of the Algarve, and you know you are dealing with a serious race. With the exception of Joao Rodrigues in the 2021 edition, which was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, we only see men who win grand tours or finish on the podium and riders who win Monuments. Tadej Pogacar, Primoz Roglic, and Remco Evenepoel (three times) are among those who have won in the last ten years.

Evenepoel is the defending champion, but he will not be there due to injuries he sustained a few months ago. This is a shame for the Belgian and his team, Soudal Quick-Step, but otherwise, there are still plenty of good people at the start.

Favorites GC Tour of the Algarve 2025

The Tour of the Algarve has an excellent field of participants for the 2025 edition. For example, Visma | Lease a Bike will show up with the duo Jonas Vingegaard and Wout van Aert, supported by Tiesj Benoot, Wilco Kelderman, and Sepp Kuss. Vingegaard is the better climber, but with the new set-up, Van Aert may have an even greater chance of winning the overall victory. The Belgian is among the favorites in every stage but must mainly survive the Foia stage.

Primoz Roglic is probably the biggest contender in the Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe jersey, who also has two strong men from the classics team who could go far, in Jan Tratnik (third last year) and Oier Lazkano. UAE-Emirates XRG is also counting on several strong riders, with the Portuguese Joao Almeida and Antonio Morgado and the strong Swiss Jan Christen as riders we must keep an eye on.

And we are far from done. INEOS Grenadiers has Thymen Arensman, Laurens De Plus, multiple winner Geraint Thomas, and Filippo Ganna in its ranks, while Bahrain Victorious is counting on Antonio Tiberi. Tao Geoghegan Hart (Lidl-Trek), Frank van den Broek, Romain Bardet (Picnic PostNL), Ilan Van Wilder (Soudal Quick-Step), Ion Izagirre, and Emanuel Buchmann (Cofidis) can also be considered GC contenders.

There are even more classic types. Maximilian Schachmann (Soudal Quick-Step), Mathias Vacek (Lidl-Trek), Stefan Küng, Romain Grégoire (Groupama-FDJ), Kasper Asgreen, Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost), and Dylan Teuns (Cofidis) are all present.
