With the Tour of the Algarve, we have the European preparation race for the classics on the program this week. While some sprinters and GC riders opt for the UAE Tour in the Middle East, several top riders start the season in southern Portugal. IDLProCycling.com is keeping track of the results and gives a detailed preview!
Take a look at the list of winners of the Tour of the Algarve, and you know you are dealing with a serious race. With the exception of Joao Rodrigues in the 2021 edition, which was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, we only see men who win grand tours or finish on the podium and riders who win Monuments. Tadej Pogacar, Primoz Roglic, and Remco Evenepoel (three times) are among those who have won in the last ten years.
Evenepoel is the defending champion, but he will not be there due to injuries he sustained a few months ago. This is a shame for the Belgian and his team, Soudal Quick-Step, but otherwise, there are still plenty of good people at the start.
2024 Remco Evenepoel
2023 Daniel Felipe Martinez
2022 Remco Evenepoel
2021 Joao Rodrigues
2020 Remco Evenepoel
2019 Tadej Pogacar
2018 Michal Kwiatkowski
2017 Primoz Roglic
2016 Geraint Thomas
2015 Geraint Thomas
Complete chaos in the first stage! After a calm start to the opening stage, everything suddenly went wrong in the final kilometer. The peloton followed the race motos and ended up on the wrong side of the barriers. Filippo Ganna rode well and crossed the line celebrating, but in the end, no winner was declared. A no contest in stage one.
No winner
After the chaos of stage one, the queen stage was immediately on the schedule for Thursday. The finale was particularly tough, with the steep Alto de Foia as the final climb. Favorites Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic waited patiently, allowing the surprising Jan Christen to seize victory — just holding off his teammate João Almeida. UAE now has a fantastic position in the overall classification.

This year, the Tour of the Algarve ends with an individual time trial to Malhao, where we usually arrive after a road race. The first seventeen kilometers are flat, but after that, we have to conquer a 2.6-kilometer hill with a 9.3% gradient. Pedal to the metal!
