Primoz Roglic leaving Jumbo-Visma, who would have thought that two or three years ago? The Slovenian, who experienced the team's full rise to the top of the world as team leader, seems unfazed by it. His new team will only be announced after the Tour of Lombardy, but IDLProCycling.com asked him the question that was on everyone's lips after his victory in the Giro dell'Emilia: Why? The rumors about Roglic's departure had been circulating in recent weeks, especially when it was recently announced that Jumbo-Visma is considering a merger with or takeover of Soudal-Quick Step. However, it was only at the start of the Giro dell'Emilia that Roglic himself revealed the news: "I am indeed leaving Jumbo-Visma. But all the details will only be revealed after my last race of this year. Right now, I am mainly looking forward to racing," he said briefly.
After the finish, Roglic took more time to discuss his surprising departure with this website. When asked if it felt strange to be riding in the yellow and black jersey for one of the last times in the Giro dell'Emilia, the Slovenian nodded. "Of course, it's special. We've achieved so much together. But things also stay the same, you know! There wasn't much different as we headed into the Italian autumn, and I'm here to do my job as best as possible. That's where my focus lies in the upcoming races."

Roglic triumphed in the Giro dell'Emilia
Roglic says it's better for both parties
The big question is simple: Why is Roglic leaving? Jumbo-Visma director Richard Plugge recently referred to him as 'the king' and he still has a contract for 2024 and 2025. "Uhhh, well, uhhh, everything came together," he clearly searches for the right words. "My personal goals and the way everything is going... Together, we decided to end it this way. It's better for both parties, I'm sure of that. I'm looking forward to new challenges."
As for where that new challenge lies, that will, in principle, be announced after the Tour of Lombardy. This makes sense since it will be Roglic's last race for Jumbo-Visma. Reportedly, INEOS Grenadiers and Lidl-Trek are the most likely potential destinations. Had Roglic stayed with Jumbo-Visma in 2024, he would have had to compete for team leadership with Jonas Vingegaard, with Sepp Kuss suddenly emerging as a major Grand Tour contender in the Vuelta a España. In a possible merger with Quick Step, Remco Evenepoel is, of course, also a significant factor.
