The the 2025 edition of the Giro d’Italia will introduce a new twist, offering riders a chance to grab extra bonus seconds in 19 of the 21 stages. The first Grand Tour of the year has partnered with Red Bull to launch the so-called "Red Bull Kilometer", setting the stage for new battles and aggressive racing.
Red Bull is also the title sponsor of Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe, the team Primož Roglič will lead as he targets a second Giro title this May. The explosive Slovenian will surely welcome the new feature, as bonus seconds have already become a bigger part of GC battles in recent years. While Grand Tours have long offered time bonuses for stage finishes with 10, 6, and 4 seconds for the top three, the Giro is now raising the stakes.
In previous editions, mid-stage sprints offered 3, 2, and 1-second bonuses. With the Red Bull Kilometer coming in 2025, riders will now battle for 6, 4, and 2 seconds. The Red Bull Kilometer will be placed exactly 1 kilometer from the finish line and will feature in every stage except the two time trials on days 2 and 10.

New pink jersey and later start for Giro as 2025 edition kicks off in Albania

The Red Bull Kilometer should not be confused with the "Golden Kilometer" used in the Baloise Belgium Tour, where multiple sprint points are packed into one kilometer. In the Giro, it is purely a commercial addition featuring just one sprint line and offering a bigger reward. In theory, if a rider wins the Red Bull Kilometer in all 19 stages, they would collect 114 bonus seconds, almost two full minutes of time gain.
The 2025 Giro d’Italia will also start a week later than usual, kicking off in Albania on Friday, May 9. After three stages on Albanian soil, riders will have a rest day on Monday, May 12, to transfer across the sea to southern Italy. With the later start, the grand finale in Rome will now take place on June 1. As always, the race will feature the iconic pink jersey, but with a slightly updated look for 2025.
