FDJ-Suez, the team of Demi Vollering, captured a short documentary of the behind-the-scenes content of the build-up, race, and aftermath of Strade Bianche. We see how the French team members of the Dutch leader go above and beyond for her and how they speak highly of each other afterward.
The video is titled 'What it took to win one of cycling's biggest races.' In it, Vollering eagerly awaits the recon: "I'm looking forward to it, and that's no joke. I can't wait to ride on gravel." The ladies take a group photo on the Piazza del Campo in Siena, and Vollering pets the team's dog, Flo.
During the briefing, team managers Nicolas Maire and Lars Boom clarified that the goal is to win. "We want to play the game in the last final. Even if there is a leading group, that is the moment we have to go. Staying calm is very important because we will make the right decisions and respond to every situation."
The video focuses on the day of the race from the perspective of Maire and Boom in the support car, where they follow the advice given the day before. "I can't wait to see Demi drop everyone," says Boom. She almost succeeded, as Anna van der Breggen was able to follow. "Tell Anna she has to work with us," Maire adds.
In Siena, Vollering crushed her opponent with Dutch instructions from Boom ("come on, go for it"), after which the team could celebrate. After a briefing from team manager Stephen Delcourt ("women's cycling won today"), Vollering took the floor and thanked her teammate Juliette Labous for her words in the media. Labous told this website afterward: "Today I did not doubt that Demi was a bit stronger than me, so I am happy to do this for her. We had to keep her calm, which may have been difficult for her in recent years. But she helps me reach a higher level. She brings positivity."
"That was very nice to hear, but it's also good that the outside world can see it now," said Vollering, who already broke down at the press conference after hearing Labous' words. "It's easy to say because it's true," the French rider explained.
