Joshua Tarling failed to live up to expectations on the first day of the Vuelta a España. The Brit was considered the top favorite for the opening time trial but ended up finishing sixth, and he was very disappointed with that afterward.

"I felt so bad," Tarling told IDLProCycling and others after his chrono. "Not to diminish anything about Edoardo Affini (who was leading at the time, ed.), he rode an excellent time trial. "I felt empty. Since the Olympics, things have been difficult. I just felt like a brick." At the Olympic Games, Tarling barely fell short of the medals in the time trial after a bike change along the way.

Tarling has no immediate explanation for his bad feelings. "I don't know; I feel heavy and a little lost. I've been struggling mentally and in terms of training since the Games. I thought I had picked myself up and was ready for today, but on the road, I felt like I was sinking," Tarling sounds gloomy.

"It seemed the wind was blowing harder and different than during recon, so maybe I went too hard in the first part," he searched for a small justification anyway.

Tarling now focuses on supporting GC riders

For Tarling, if he gets that far on the final day, there will be another chance for revenge. Then, a time trial in Madrid is scheduled. Over the following few stages, Tarling hopes to regain the good feeling of being in a supporting role. "I screwed up my time trail. In the next stages, I'm going to dedicate myself to the team; I'm going to help Jhonatan, Carlos, Laurens, and Thymen (Narvázez, Rodríguez, De Plus, and Arensman, ed.) wherever I can, whoever needs me. Especially tomorrow, I can do my part when we ride along the coast."

"I'm really bummed," repeated the man from Wales. "I keep messing around. I really need a big win," he concluded.
