What a debut! Lorena Wiebes wins World Scratch title with bike length lead

Lorena Wiebes highlighted her Track Cycling World Championships debut with a gold medal in the Scratch event. In the arena in Ballerup, Denmark, there was no measure on the sprint star, who has numerous titles, especially on the road.

The Scratch concept is simple: The women ride forty laps, and whoever finishes first wins. On behalf of the Netherlands, Wiebes was a remarkable participant. The SD Worx-Protime sprint star on the road was making her debut at a World Championships track cycling. In the past, she performed several times on the track, but only at the Dutch National Championships. She fared well there, including twice winning the national title in the Scratch event.

Frenchwoman Marion Borras went on the attack first after the signal was given. At one point, she had a lead of half a lap, but it would stop there; lactic acidity set in, and soon, she came to a standstill, which was quite remarkable.

Wiebes wins the battle with Valente and then shows her skills

Wiebes, meanwhile, kept her calm and seemed mainly focused on the final sprint, which, after all, is what she does best. After Borras, it was a long wait for another attack. It happened ten laps from the end. American Jennifer Valente managed to grab a gap as the rest looked at each other. However, she did not continue.

Then, the Spanish tried. She briefly had a gap, but the rest were close and finally stormed past her. It was an excellent battle for positions. Wiebes was sitting around sixth or seventh place with four laps to go. She moved to fourth place and went side by side to battle Valente. Wiebes then started her sprint and won the Scratch by bike lengths—what a debut!
