INEOS Grenadiers is undergoing a massive transformation and no one knows precisely how the multi-million dollar British formation will emerge from it. Dozens of riders and staff members went, and dozens of new faces arrived. Some leaders stayed with the team; others decided to take their chances. What is it like to do your job amid all that turmoil? As the team's mechanic, Dane Rune Kristensen tells his story to Ekstra Bladet. The fact that mechanics are being interviewed these days says it all about the great unknown at
INEOS Grenadiers. Norwegian Kurt Asle Arvesen will soon be one of the most essential faces on the staff as sports director. But according to Kristensen, there is much more. "During our team getaway in Manchester, all the new recruits had to stand up at dinner. I think six or seven riders and maybe 30 staff members stood up."
It was also necessary to bring fresh air into the team that was once so dominant. "Many people left because they didn't believe that this team can improve and that new things are good. Many of them still refer to the Team Sky days. One of the reasons we are getting defeated now is because other teams have figured out how to beat Team Sky. It's not cool when people get fired, but it's part of the game in top sports. It could happen to me one day, too."

The vibe at INEOS Grenadiers always remained good
According to Kristensen, INEOS Grenadiers' first priority is getting everyone on the same page. Only then is quality considered. "The team's vibe has always been one of the best; it's an excellent group. I think the team is also in the right place for next year. It didn't work out this season, but the management hasn't panicked and is now back in control. I don't pay too much attention to all the stories otherwise because I feel good here. Something is happening, but it doesn't matter whether I work for
Tom Pidcock or
Carlos Rodriguez."
