First place, third place, and… 22nd. Baloise Glowi Lions enjoyed a stellar day at the Spanish World Cup in Benidorm, Spain, with Thibau Nys taking the victory and Lars van der Haar finishing third. However, Pim Ronhaar’s experience was quite different. The Dutchman crashed while in a promising position, as team manager Sven Nys explained to IDLProCycling.com after the race.

Ronhaar had started off strong, staying near the front throughout the race, until he suddenly dropped back and crossed the finish line in around 20th place, clutching his ribs. What happened? "Pim crashed. He was feeling really good and was riding in fifth or sixth position when he went down. After that, the fight was gone, but there is no damage," Nys said.

The Baloise Glowi Lions team manager is relieved that Ronhaar escaped serious injury and remains confident in his potential for the upcoming World Championships. "Pim is in good shape, but he needs different conditions to really compete at the front," Nys said, referring to the tougher courses where Ronhaar typically excels.

Ronhaar still aiming for good World Championships despite lack of peak form

The runner-up at the recent Dutch National Championships in Oisterwijk in the Netherlands has been training well in Spain over the past week and still hopes for a strong showing at the World Championships. "Reaching peak form has been difficult for me this season because there’s not much of a base to build on. I do my best in every race, as best as I can," Ronhaar said last week, reflecting on a cyclo-cross season that started late due to his battle with Lyme disease.
