2024 certainly won't go down in the books as Wout van Aert's most successful year, but seeing the Belgian of Visma | Lease a Bike back in action in the last week of the year was great. Van Aert was at the cyclo-cross in Loenhout and shared photos of a busy final week of the year on New Year's Eve.
Van Aert's original return date in the field was December 23 in Mol, but illness prevented that. This was another setback in an autumn already full of bad news. It started in the Vuelta a España, where Van Aert suffered a significant knee injury after a crash. We would almost forget his three-stage wins and that he wore the green and polka dot jersey then.
Van Aert has been steadily working on his recovery over the past few months, but he was already warned that the knee is not fully recovered heading into the cyclo-cross period. Without a crash in the final lap, the Visma star would have finished on the podium in Loenhout without a doubt; now, he had to settle for fourth place.

On January 4, the next cyclo-cross is scheduled for Van Aert in Gullegem. After that, he will also do Dendermonde ( January 5), Benidorm (January 19), and Maasmechelen (January 25). He will thus be able to make at least four more similar photo series, as he did Tuesday after week 52 of 2024. A week of training in the cold, training the still battered knee (see the scar!) in the gym, celebrating Christmas with the family, enjoying a new coffee machine, and, of course, a lot of attention from media and fans in Loenhout.
