Fem van Empel won the first cyclo-cross of 2025 brilliantly. She prevailed in the X2O Trophy-cross GP Sven Nys in Baal after a fierce battle with Lucinda Brand and Puck Pieterse. In doing so, the world champion recovered from a crash in the opening lap.

Van Empel and Pieterse were, without a doubt, the best starters. The world champion and her companion managed to break away from Brand in the opening lap, but suddenly, the rainbow jersey found herself with her left side in the mud. Moreover, the Visma | Lease a Bike star's bike was battered, so she had to minimize the damage until the pit area by half-stepping, walking, and cycling here and there.

Pieterse was now in the lead, half a minute ahead of Van Empel after one lap. After two laps, her lead over Brand was also a good fourteen seconds. The problem for Pieterse was that she also went to the ground in lap three, almost in the same spot as Van Empel. She, too, had to continue completely covered in mud, but Brand quickly closed the gap.

Van Empel wins after brilliant chase

We suddenly had a new situation after two of the five rounds and three more. The virtually error-free Brand was now in the lead, with Pieterse in second position. Van Empel, in the rainbow jersey, accelerated halfway through the race and pulled out all the stops to get back in front. That slowly but surely succeeded in the tough lap of more than nine minutes. First, Pieterse was passed, and as we entered the final lap, Brand also came into sight.

The race leader did very little wrong, but on a technical stretch with a steep climb, Brand had to run, and Van Empel promptly came to her wheel. Brand then tried to accelerate and avoid a sprint, but that didn't work. Van Empel gave her all one more time and passed her compatriot in the sprint. Pieterse finished third at an appropriate distance.
