"If I have good legs, I still must adapt." Type of course at European Championship hardly matters to Thibau Nys

On Friday, the highly challenging cyclo-cross race near the Koppenberg (Belgium) was followed two days later by the fast European Championships in Pontevedra, Spain, 1800 kilometers away. That's the summary of the first weekend of November in the cyclo-cross, but how do you compete in both races?
Not everyone chooses the double: for example, Laurens Sweeck and Niels Vandeputte skip the cross in Oudenaarde (Belgium), knowing that on the course in Galicia, they could have a serious shot at the European title. Still, a significant portion of the already small cyclo-cross peloton competes both Friday and Sunday, given the trend that a classic like the Koppenberg is too important to skip.
"The combination is going to be difficult," Thibau Nys told us in the preview of his team, Baloise Trek Lions. "The Koppenberg is one of the toughest races on the calendar, and then a travel day to Spain on Saturday won't help the recovery. Anyway, the Koppenberg is simply too iconic for me to skip it."
Lucinda Brand will also start in both races. "Travel-wise, it will be a difficult weekend. We have already sent some bikes to Spain, but the other bikes will go that way right after the Koppenbergcross. Without the help of the team, none of that would be possible. I myself have to catch a flight, but above all, I have to eat and sleep a lot to make sure I can recover properly."

Nys and Brand among top favorites for European Cyclo-cross Championships

Nys and Brand stand a good chance on Friday and Sunday at the European Championships. "It will be my first time in Pontevedra. The type of course hardly matters to me. If I have good legs, I still must adapt to every situation and hopefully compete for the top spots," said the Belgian winner in Overijse (Belgium).
Brand expects an exciting battle in Spain. "It's going to be hard to get rid of the others, so it might come down to how much energy is left. But I'm looking forward to it at the Koppenberg and the European Championships. A championship is always special as far as I'm concerned,' concludes the experienced Dutchwoman.
