Most people will have started the new year with a relaxing day on January 1. Others have already returned to work as usual. But a now familiar tradition is the New Year's dive. Puck Pieterse knows this habit but had to participate in the cyclocross in Baal on the first day of the year.
The Fenix-Deceuninck rider had an excellent start to the new year. During the GP Sven Nys, she was riding comfortably in the lead, with a nice gap on her nearest rival, Lucinda Brand. The Dutch champion quickly rejoined, but in the end Fem van Empel won the race: Pieterse finished third.

On Instagram, the world mountain bike champion can laugh about her mistake. "Tutorial on how to lose a 10-second lead," she joked. With that, she captioned it 'New Year's Dive'. She is not too bothered about the missed victory: She closes her cycling season with a year in review. Even immediately after the cyclo-cross, Pieterse was not dissatisfied with her performance. "It's the first race in which I felt like a cyclo-cross rider again," she said. "I was able to compete for the win in one of the most spectacular races of the season. After Gavere, I got sick, so I didn't know how well I would perform today. Being in bed served me well." The Dutch will be back at the start of the X2O cross in Koksijde on Friday, January 3.
