Cyclo-cross can be quite chaotic at times. This was also the case during the World Cup in Dublin: Czech rider Michael Boros started in the lead on the first lap but caused a massive crash. Thibau Nys was the biggest victim, eventually abandoning the race..
Boros, the Czech Republic champion, did not overcome the second barrier in the opening lap and flipped over. His bike flew across the width and knocked Felipe Orts over. Boros got up and wanted to grab his bike, but he traversed the path awkwardly. Thibau Nys then smashed full on his competitor.
The Belgian from Baloise Trek Lions remained lying down with visible pain in his ankle. Eventually, he got back on his feet, and his gap after one lap exceeded one and a half minutes. After five laps, he abandoned the race.
At VTM News Nys explained his story. "When I was lying there, someone went right over my ankle. I couldn't put any more pressure on it. I tried to ride again, but it got worse and worse. I was completely knocked out. It's very unfortunate. I had hoped I could ride a nice race," the Belgian said.
Nys awaits a training period in Spain, about which IDLProCycling.com spoke with his father, Sven, in Dublin. "He is looking forward to a period where he can train, after which he can build up to Namen and the Christmas period. That training in Spain will do him good."
"There might have been more in it, and then I'm talking especially about the weekend of Merksplas and Hamme," Sven reflects. "There could have been a win for us. It was a little less in Antwerp, after which he also caught a cold." So Nys already didn't start the cross in Dublin in top shape.
