The stage victory of Giulio Ciccone in the Tour of the Alps will be an expensive joke for Lidl-Trek. The 30-year-old Italian has a habit of throwing his sunglasses into the crowds to celebrate a victory, and day 1 in South Tyrol was no different. Apart from the fact that Lidl-Trek needs new glasses for its leader, the race jury also penalized the action. In the jury report, Ciccone was fined 250 Swiss francs and had 15 UCI points deducted.
It was described as 'carelessly throwing away sunglasses at the finish line.' "I don't have that many glasses with me, so maybe I should ask the team for more," the climber laughed about his victory gesture in the press conference afterward. Whether he will do it again if he wins another stage remains to be seen...

Sports director Steven de Jongh responds to fine; Patrick Lefevere also expresses dissatisfaction

On X, Steven de Jongh, sports director at Lidl-Trek, responded to the victory gesture and the fine imposed on his rider. “I hope UCI made a mistake,” the Dutch former rider said on the platform. “This is his signature for the win already for years! Sport is emotion. No fine needed !!”
De Jongh also refers to the ones who found Ciccone's glasses. A young fan picked them up, while Ciccone had no idea where they had landed. "See the happy kid at the end of the movie," De Jongh writes in his tweet. "Congrats, Cicco," he ends his message.
De Jongh receives support from former Soudal Quick-Step team boss Patrick Lefevere. The Belgian still tweets regularly about cycling and has also seen these images. "This fine is a disgrace," he states, adding an angry emoji. To be continued...
