Alberto Contador and Chris Froome, they fought numerous heroic duels in grand tours during their time. This week, the two standout general classification riders got on their bikes together for a ride in Miami, where they both also participated as guests in the 'Best Buddies Challenge.' Mark Cavendish was also present for the charity ride, and he took the time for a 'romantic' outing with his compatriot.
Froome and Contador provided thrilling battles in the mountain stages of the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España in the past. Both stood on the final podium of the 2014 Vuelta a España, where Contador took the victory. Although they were fierce competitors during their professional cycling careers, the relationship between the two is friendly. This is evident from their words after their recent ride together. "Great to catch up with the one and only Alberto Contador in Miami," Froome wrote on Instagram. Contador, in turn, felt nostalgic, saying, "Reminiscing on old battles!" They participated in a charity ride aimed at helping adults with developmental disabilities find employment.
The two kept their ride to nearly forty kilometers, as shown on Contador's Strava. With an average speed of nearly 38 kilometers per hour, they maintained a strong pace. While Contador retired from professional racing seven years ago, Froome shows no signs of stopping, despite his glory days being some years behind him. The four-time Tour de France winner has a contract with Israel-Premier Tech until 2025.
Cavendish was also part of the ride in Miami. Afterwards, he and Froomie opted for an outing off the bike. The two British cycling icons went on a sunset cruise off the coast of the American city. Watching the sun set under blankets on the deck — it doesn't get much more romantic than that! "Nothing better than a sunset cruise with someone special," Froome said on Instagram.
