The 2025 cycling year is about to begin! WorldTour riders traditionally start with the Tour Down Under in the south of Australia. In the meantime, the provisional start list is being released, and IDLProCycling.com will monitor developments in this article.

Jayco AlUla announced its team for the Tour Down Under - with Luke Plapp and Mauro Schmid - at the end of 2024, and some other names are also emerging here and there from the other teams. Such a (business class) trip to Australia must be planned well in advance, as it is a long trip at the beginning of the 2025 cycling year.

With the traditional course they've mapped out again in Adelaide and the surrounding area, we also see a more traditional field of participants. This includes many young, neo-profs, and older riders who love coming there. For example, Tijmen Graat, Menno Huising, and Loe van Belle of Visma | Lease a Bike belong to the first category, while Dylan van Baarle of that same team, Bauke Mollema (Lidl-Trek) and Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers) already lean more towards category two.

Defending champion Stephen Williams has also been enrolled again by his team Israel-Premier Tech. The Welshman will be able to expect competition from the likes of Jhonatan Narváez (UAE-Team Emirates), Paul Lapeira (Decathlon AG2R,) Laurence Pithie, Finn Fisher-Black (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) and Alberto Bettiol of EF Education-EasyPost. Good sprinters on the provisional start list are Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Victorious), Sam Welsford (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe), Bryan Coquard (Cofidis), Tobias Lund Andresen (dsm-firmenich PostNL) and young Lidl-Trek-German Tim Torn Teutenberg.

As for Dutch riders, in addition to the names above, we also see debutants Matthijs Paasschens (Bahrain Victorious), Pascal Eenkhoorn (Soudal Quick-Step) and Jan Maas (Cofidis), as well as Danny van Poppel (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe), Jardi van der Lee (EF Education-EasyPost), Lars Boven (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Ide Schelling (XDS Astana) and Taco van der Hoorn of Intermarché-Wanty. The latter has planned a biking trip through New Zealand beforehand.
