Ben Tulett, the 23-year-old British rider, will not be able to represent Visma | Lease a Bike in the upcoming Tour Down Under. Despite a prolonged rehabilitation, Tulett, eager to return to Australia, ultimately had to concede that he was not yet fit enough to travel. The Dutch team has announced that Belgian Julien Vermote will step in for him in the first WorldTour race in 2025.
Tulett was introduced at the beginning of 2024 as a rider transferred from INEOS Grenadiers, whom Visma | Lease a Bike expected a lot from. So far, the ex-cyclo-cross rider has mostly been affected by bad luck. After illness in the Tour of the Basque Country, he could not show his best in his beloved hill classics last year. After a good tour of Switzerland, he wanted to prepare for the Vuelta a Espana, but disaster struck in the previous preparation race for the Spanish Tour.
Following a hard crash in the Tour of Burgos, Tulett suffered multiple fractures to his shoulder, abruptly ending his season. "Multiple fractures to my shoulder will keep me away from racing for some time now, and a period of recovery awaits. Feeling incredibly grateful for the huge support I have been receiving from my family, friends, and Visma | Lease a Bike," he expressed at the time via social media.

With Tulett's last race kilometers ridden as early as August 6, he was expected to start early in the 2025 Tour Down Under. However, Visma | Lease a Bike confirmed that Tulett's fitness was not up to par, leading to his replacement as a precaution. Vermote has been called up as the first backup to make the trip to Adelaide, which traditionally hosts the Tour Down Under.
With Tulett's cancellation, the Dutch team also loses a potential contender for the GC. His compatriots Thomas Gloag and young sprinter Matthew Brennan boarded the plane, as did young Dutch riders Menno Huising, Tijmen Graat, and Loe van Belle. Dylan van Baarle, who traveled earlier, completes the selection. The Dutch rider requested to participate in the Tour Down Under following long absences due to injury in 2024.
