Sam Welsford, an Australian professional cyclist born on January 19, 1996, competes with the UCI WorldTeam Bora–Hansgrohe. He began cycling at seven, influenced by his father, and quickly rose through the ranks, claiming junior world titles in team pursuit in 2013 and 2014. His track cycling achievements include a gold medal at the 2016 UCI Track Cycling World Championships and winning the 2019 UCI Men's elite Scratch race, shortly after setting a world record in the Men's team pursuit.
At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Welsford earned a bronze medal in the Men's team pursuit alongside Australian teammates and finished fifth in the Men's Madison. Transitioning from track to road, he joined Team DSM in 2021 and has since shown promise in road racing, marking his prowess with several notable victories and podium finishes across various competitions.
In 2022, he claimed a stage win at the Tour of Turkey and secured podium finishes at Scheldeprijs and the Bredene Koksijde Classic. The following year, 2023, was even more fruitful, with victories at the Grand Prix Criquielion, two stages of the Vuelta a San Juan, and a stage at the Renewi Tour, alongside a second-place finish overall at the ZLM Tour and podiums at Scheldeprijs and the Veenendaal–Veenendaal Classic. In 2024, Welsford started the year well, notably winning the Points classification and three stages at the Tour Down Under, and earning a third place in the Criterium at the National Road Championships.
