Tim Wellens, born on May 10, 1991, is a Belgian professional cyclist currently with UCI WorldTeam UAE Team Emirates. Coming from a family with a rich cycling heritage, Wellens has been competing professionally since mid-2012, initially starting with Lotto–Belisol after progressing from their development team.
Wellens' professional journey began impressively; he showcased his potential in his debut year, culminating in a notable tenth overall at the Tour of Beijing and securing second in the young rider classification. His career trajectory continued upwards with a significant victory in the 2014 Eneco Tour, secured through a decisive solo breakaway on Stage 6 that also clinched his overall win. In 2015, Wellens repeated his success at the Eneco Tour with a strategic attack, maintaining his lead to win the event consecutively.
His palmarès expanded with a stage win at the 2016 Giro d'Italia and an overall victory at the Tour de Pologne, underlining his ability to perform across varied conditions. Despite a challenging 2017 season, highlighted by his principled stand on medical exemptions, Wellens continued to achieve, including back-to-back wins at the Trofeo Serra de Tramuntana across 2017 and 2018, and a stage win at the 2018 Vuelta a Andalucía. His 2023 season was highlighted by an overall win at the Renewi Tour and a stage victory at the Vuelta a Andalucía, alongside other significant results in the Tour of Guangxi, Kuurne–Brussels–Kuurne and Vuelta a Murcia.
